Lenn Daman

    In an on going effort to promote the Carolina Shag.  Lenn and his partner offer a variety of shag lessons, workshops and dance exhibitions throughout the southeast.  

    Teaching for over 25 years in the Carolina Shag, Lenn offers some of the finest lessons in the Apex, Holly Spring, Fuquay-Varina, Garner, Cary, Chapel Hill, Durham and Raleigh area.  Whether you wish to learn to dance for your high school reunion or to compete at the national level the path starts out the same.

    Lenn is an active member of the Competitive Shaggers Association and dances in the professional division.  He also dances in the Shag Nationals Senior Professional Division and the USA Grand Nationals Carolina Classic (Shag) Masters Division, while earning several awards to his credit at both the local and national level. 

2006 USA Grand Nationals

Lenn and June recently danced in the 2006 USA Grand Nationals in Atlanta, Georgia.  Dancing in the Carolina Classic Masters Division, Lenn and June showed what Carolina Shag was really about.  The song they danced to was a remake of a classic shag song "Nip Sip" by June's husband, John Arthurs, guitar and vocals with the "The Castaways Band."  Check out some of the pictures from their dance by clicking here.

"Once the bug bites ya..," June Arthurs says of shag's no-cure infectiousness. Arthurs is co-instructor of shag lessons at both Shorty's and its sister club in Pittsboro, Scoreboard Grill. She remembers her mother teaching lessons at an Arthur Murray school, a national dance instruction company, and learning "in her Dad's arms." She's a lithe dancer, too, a petite woman with a big grin and an instant charm. Her dexterous footwork and weight-shifting turns led her to the top 10 at the Shag Grand Nationals competition this year. She even danced with one of the so-called original "bad boys" of shag. Now in their 60s, that cast of beach music rebels still gets respect. "They were the kind that would roll their cigarettes up in their sleeve back then," she remembers.  Click on magazine cove for the complete story.

Shag is so easy a baby can do it!

Lenn & Partner take 1st Place

In the first Handicapped Mixed Doubles contest held at Loafers Beach Club and sponsored by the Capital Area Shag Club, Lenn and his partner show that shagging is so easy a baby can do it by taking first place.  Sporting  bonnets, bibs, rattles, pacifiers, booties, bottles, teddy bears and diapers (yes diapers).  Lenn and partner bring down the house with their high stepping moves.
